Mulling Spices in Apple Cider Recipe for Kids

Making your own batch of cider with mulling spices is a fun family or classroom activity incorporating all of the senses! Feel the orange slices and cinnamon sticks. Smell the fragrant fall aroma floating in the air. Listen as you pour the cider into the pan and as it begins to simmer. Pour it into a clear mug to see each of the different ingredients. And the best part of all, tasting the warm concoction you created is the utmost reward!
You can either buy a packet of mulling spices already combined and measured, or you can purchase each spice to make your own. I recommend the latter if you'll be making more than one batch. It's more cost effective and gives kids the opportunity to explore each spice individually as well as measure out the necessary amount. There are lots of variations of mulling spices but our family loves this simple and tasty 'Mulled Cider' recipe from Bobby Flay! After the first round, we decided to add more spices to make it even tastier.
Ingredients & Tools:
Saucepan
Stovetop
2 Quarts of Apple Cider
1 orange, sliced thin
10 Whole Cloves
10 Whole Allspice Berries
3 Cinnamon Sticks
Instructions:
Combine all ingredients into the saucepan, then pour in the apple cider and stir. Turn on the burner to low until the cider begins to simmer. Allow to simmer for 10 minutes to let the flavors combine and the aroma fill the room. Remove from the stovetop and allow to cool for a minute or two (longer for young kids) and then pour into heat-safe mugs to serve. Enjoy!
